VLC Player - Firefox plugin Problem - Remove VLC Plugin

I love VLC Media Player... It plays almost any type of video and is super lightweight. A while ago I noticed that I was using a fairly old version of the player and decided to update it.

So, during the installation, I noticed the option for Mozilla Plugin. I though, great.. VLC + Firefox... this should be awesome...But not quite.

I didn't like the way it handled the playing of videos. WMV's loaded up with text saying "[no video]" yet, if I waited long enough, the video would load up and play, but I had no player controls. MPG, wouldn't play at all...so I had to play around in the settings, and that became a mess, where the MPG files would download to my computer via Firefox, and then play in a separate Quicktime video. This was clunky and annoying.

Also, while playing the WMVs, it would occasionally freeze up and crash Firefox. I looked around everywhere for a solution to this problem... but couldn't find it. I just wanted to restore my Firefox defaults.. they way it played MPGs in the browser, and launched WMP for WMV files.. I can live with that.

Finally, I just uninstalled VLC, and checked the box to remove my preferences. This removed the association with Firefox, and everything went back to normal. I downloaded VLC again, and didn't install the plugin this time.

Annoying problem but it was solved the old fashioned way - reinstallation.

Renaming

Renaming npvlc.dll works. But I wonder whether it is ok to delete it or not.

just go

just go Tools>Add-ons>Plugins>disable VLC like Mike said It be cool if you could disable sound only for the plugin (mp3) as it has no controls

THANX you guys! Great help.

THANX you guys! Great help.

manual uninstall

If you want to PROPERLY uninstall the plug-in without messing about with filenames or deleting the dll you can simply delete the relevant key from HKLM\SOFTWARE\MozillaPlugins using regedit. This will remove it from the plugins list and solve any problems caused by the faulty plugin.

In firefox 3, go to

In firefox 3, go to Tools>Add-ons>Plugins>disable VLC

Thank you! Renaming the DLL Worked Wonders!

Renaming the npvlc.dll file in the VLC Installation directory (ex: C:\Progra~1\VideoLAN\) forces Firefox to play embedded videos using WMP, thus the trick worked wonders! Thank you so much!

thanks1 renaming that dll solved the problem for me either

You can also remove by going

You can also remove by going into the VLC Player installation directory and removing or renaming the file: npvlc.dll, In my case I renamed it to npvlc.dll.bak and there were no more issues. If you should wish to reuse the folder just delete the .bak suffix.
