Getting Better at Call Of Duty - Halo - Half Life - Gears of War - Army of Two

in

I had 4 teeth extracted a while ago and for a few days after the surgery, I stayed at my parents, where after lots of haggling from my brother, I finally caved - I started playing a first person shooter on a game console.

Don't get me wrong, I love first person shooter games (big fan of Tribes), I'm just not good at them with the analog sticks on game pads. Give me a mouse and keyboard, and I can kick ass.

So, the game of choice was Army Of Two. The reason I started playing that was because while I learned the controls, got shot up and brought my twitch reflexes up to speed, my brother could pull the weight - sometimes literally (in the game). If you haven't heard of Army Of Two, check out my brief review here.

So, having finished Army of Two, and playing Call Of Duty - Modern Warfare, I have some tips and tricks at people who are in the same boat as me.

So here they are:

  1. Persistance - Play, play, and play some more.
  2. Patients - You won't get good at these games over night. Don't worry about your strategy in the beginning, that will come later, these games are all about split-second-reactions. Only way to develop that skill is to follow Step (1).
  3. Don't get discouraged - There are people who will have played these FPS games for months, and will snipe you as soon as you walk around that corner, but don't give up, learn from your defeats, and gain confidence from your victories.
  4. Take a break - This might contradict (1) and (3), but you need the break. If you are constantly getting killed and are starting to hate the game, turn it off, and come back to it later.
  5. Watch and learn - see how other people play, notice the patterns, take note of the weapons/specials/perk combinations they use. Everyone has their own preference, but use these as starting points.
  6. Experiment - Try all the weapons/specials/perk combinations and see what works for you. If people call you a n00b! for using a certain weapons/specials/perk, then so be it - you are a newbie. Use what works for you.
  7. Join a different room/game/match - If you've joined a room full of veterans, where you can't take 2 steps before your life is ended, you will end up in (3). If that happens follow (4) and when you come back, join a different room/game/match where you will have more luck against opponents of the same skill-set.
  8. Repeat Steps (1) and (2)
One thing to keep in mind - These games are very, very good at rewarding you - which translates into more playing of the game. In the beginning you will get rewarded for getting 3 kills, and you will move up a rank, next rank will take you 6 kills and so on. You can use those as markers of your progress - BUT CAUTION - this is the thing that motivates you to continue playing, can cause ADDICTION.

Yes for the second step.

Yes for the second step. Playing games is alot like Acting. First memorize and memorize. Then you can incorporate the acting bit. By memorizing i mean learn how to play. Learn the simple thing such as aiming with na iron sight and without. Zooming in and not zooming. Then after you have the shooting part come natural to you then you add your Strategy. Playing Rainbow Six Vegas is the best example first learn the cover and shoot function, then learn how to run and shoot, then learn the old throw a frag and run (throw a frag far enough that you can run and die by your own use the dust and the granade itself for a moment of safety) . Then after you can predict behavior, if you know that a certain hallway is granade central don't run through it for the first 30 seconds, wait. The most important thing is two predict the enemies patterns. If you are playing AI then just remember where they were, and if they are human put your self in their shoes. And last but not least if they are better then you don't leave, learn. Remember how they killed you, and from where, so next time check in that place and see if he still there. And remember to always have a Vendetta meaning if a person kills you chase them, and try to find them because chance has it that you might get kills along the way.
