Getting Better at Call Of Duty - Halo - Half Life - Gears of War - Army of Two
I had 4 teeth extracted a while ago and for a few days after the surgery, I stayed at my parents, where after lots of haggling from my brother, I finally caved - I started playing a first person shooter on a game console.
Don't get me wrong, I love first person shooter games (big fan of Tribes), I'm just not good at them with the analog sticks on game pads. Give me a mouse and keyboard, and I can kick ass.
So, the game of choice was Army Of Two. The reason I started playing that was because while I learned the controls, got shot up and brought my twitch reflexes up to speed, my brother could pull the weight - sometimes literally (in the game). If you haven't heard of Army Of Two, check out my brief review here.
So, having finished Army of Two, and playing Call Of Duty - Modern Warfare, I have some tips and tricks at people who are in the same boat as me.
So here they are:
- Persistance - Play, play, and play some more.
- Patients - You won't get good at these games over night. Don't worry about your strategy in the beginning, that will come later, these games are all about split-second-reactions. Only way to develop that skill is to follow Step (1).
- Don't get discouraged - There are people who will have played these FPS games for months, and will snipe you as soon as you walk around that corner, but don't give up, learn from your defeats, and gain confidence from your victories.
- Take a break - This might contradict (1) and (3), but you need the break. If you are constantly getting killed and are starting to hate the game, turn it off, and come back to it later.
- Watch and learn - see how other people play, notice the patterns, take note of the weapons/specials/perk combinations they use. Everyone has their own preference, but use these as starting points.
- Experiment - Try all the weapons/specials/perk combinations and see what works for you. If people call you a n00b! for using a certain weapons/specials/perk, then so be it - you are a newbie. Use what works for you.
- Join a different room/game/match - If you've joined a room full of veterans, where you can't take 2 steps before your life is ended, you will end up in (3). If that happens follow (4) and when you come back, join a different room/game/match where you will have more luck against opponents of the same skill-set.
- Repeat Steps (1) and (2)

Yes for the second step.
