Design Decision - Images in my blog

Not sure how I ran across this website, but Philsblogging.com write about a lot of things I write about. Just a few days ago, we got into a really good debate talking about the Mac Vs PC, Zune, iPod, Vista and lots more. Check it out here in his blog post - Restoring The Faith.

What does this have to do with my design decision? Well this afternoon, I stepped back from my website and tried to imagine what a first time visitor would see. I'm happy with the look and feel of the site, there is a consistent design across all the pages and is minimalist to make sure the content gets the focus, but it's missing something... its missing colour.

I like my current layout, colours and format - so how do I solved this dilemma? I looked at Philsblogging and noticed what made it attractive. Images, more importantly, small thumbnails that complement its blog post.Image Add Icon

I have never been a fan of adding images to posts, mainly because they are hard to manage and keep track of. They can also build up pretty quickly and get out of hand if you don't have good organization.

So, here goes...

  • Mainly going to stick to JPEG format, until the APNG format becomes popular.
  • Try to liven up the post with pictures.
  • Keep the images organized.
  • Find Drupal utility to help manage the images.

Eye Candy

Hello! First, thank you for mentioning my blog on your blog. That obviously is what the blogsphere is all about. :) Great that you want to add more visual content to your site. I know, that my blog contains a lot of pictures, but I am the kind of guy that goes for eye candy on a site, so if a blog that I visit the first time looks appealing to me, I am more likely to come back and follow stories. If you were using a Mac, I highly recommend this piece of software: http://xtralean.com/IWOverview.html -- I am sure there is something similar out there. I'll watch out for you. My oranisation is pretty easy. I put all images into "/up/year-month-nameoftheimage.png/jpg" - That makes the usage easy with src="/up/...jpg" (especially if you are using permalinks). Good luck with all that. I'll check later.

Eye Candy - Me too

Same here... I'm all for the eye candy. This day in age, you have to make it look good for it to attract any audience... and that goes for any thing. (Check out this sexy electric car - Tesla Roadster)

I'm not on a Mac, so I can't get the ImageWell software that you pointed out... but that's why I have GIMP and Photoshop for... But that software would be really handy for quick things, where I don't need to fireup memory hungry Photoshop for... to bad I'm on Win XP.

As for organization, I started of with just a YYYYMMDD_filename.jpg format...But I might move to folders with YYYY/MM/filename.jpg... just so that the one image folder doesn't have thousands of files in it. Thanks for the tip..

Eye Candy PLUS Content

Browsing through your archives I know that you are not one of them. Those designing fun kids, that make a webpage look good but obviously forget that content plays an important role :) So my recipe: Eye candy looks PLUS content. The ImageWell is quite nifty. You can upload it to your FTP. That's the ultimate time-saver. And PS can be a pain. But now that I have my Macbook that doesn't even take that long :P

PS is really great

Photoshop is really a great software... lost of years of experience have made it very functional yet easy to work with. When I'm forced to use GIMP on a computer that doesn't have PS, I really feel the pinch. GIMP is not intutive at all... the controls are weird, and I don't like their multi-window look. I prefer, one big window, with panels... like PS. I wish I had a new fast computer...But I'm happy with the current state of mine, it's doing pretty good. I'll think about upgrading after the chirstmas rush. Can't be bothered with that right now...also the Christmas shopping bill will be big...(Which reminds me... I have to start that soon) :D

Looking for a good Article spinner script

Does anyone know of a good article spinning script. Looking to take my articles and PLR articles and spin them. Steven Walsh
